Why INFORM?
Human knowledge of the material world has never been greater.
Science allows us to observe nature across extraordinary scales. Engineering enables us to transform matter with unprecedented precision and consequence. However, increasing specialization can fragment our understanding of how these discoveries relate to larger questions concerning reality, meaning, responsibility, and what it means to be human.
INFORM asks whether these questions can be examined together without erasing the distinctive methods, insights, and limits of the disciplines and traditions through which humans pursue them.
Its premise is simple:

No single discipline encompasses the full range of questions raised by the material world and the human encounter with it.
INFORM therefore creates a space for sustained conversation among science and engineering, philosophy, history and the humanities, the social sciences, metaphysical reflection, and diverse intellectual and wisdom traditions.
The objective is neither disciplinary reduction nor artificial synthesis.
It is integrative inquiry: asking what becomes visible when different modes of understanding are brought into rigorous conversation while their differences are preserved.

INFORM advances a proposition for systematic investigation
Human beings encounter matter, develop knowledge of it, interpret that knowledge through larger frameworks of understanding, derive meaning and value, and translate these understandings into action and material expression. The resulting material and cultural environments subsequently participate in forming human beings and conditioning future encounters with the world.
INFORM investigates whether recurring patterns within these relationships can be identified across time, cultures, civilizations, and contemporary technological change.

Investigating how scientific knowledge, philosophical and metaphysical reflection, cultural inheritance, and underlying assumptions interact in shaping—and reshaping—the larger frameworks through which individuals and civilizations understand reality and humanity’s place within it.

How have humans sought to understand the experience of being human within the reality they inhabit?
Examining how diverse intellectual and wisdom traditions have engaged enduring dimensions of human existence—including consciousness and selfhood, birth and mortality, suffering and flourishing, love and loss, freedom and responsibility, wonder and beauty, contingency and mystery, community and belonging, and questions of the transcendent or ultimate.
INFORM approaches these traditions as accumulated records of humanity’s sustained efforts to understand reality, the human condition, and how life might meaningfully be lived.

How do understandings of reality and the human condition shape meaning, value, purpose, and responsibility?
Investigating how scientific knowledge, lived experience, metaphysical reflection, cultural inheritance, and wisdom traditions interact in shaping Weltanschauung—and, in turn, how individuals and societies orient themselves toward reality and engage questions that empirical description alone may not resolve.

How does what humans understand and value become embodied in what they create?

Beginning with matter as a common foundation of scientific and engineering inquiry, the course progressively expands toward questions of knowledge, metaphysics, worldview, meaning, responsibility, and human formation.
Thus, INFORM research informs education, while the educational environment provides a living setting in which the integrative inquiry can be explored, questioned, and further developed.

INFORM emerged from Foundations Matter: Toward an Understanding of Matter and Matter Within, an interdisciplinary course that begins with a fundamental inquiry into matter and progressively expands to ask how our understanding of the material world shapes our understanding of reality, meaning, and ultimately ourselves.
The questions explored through Foundations Matter became the foundation for a broader interdisciplinary research inquiry—INFORM.
